School of Nightmares is a single level where you need to find 3 keys (or more in a team), unlock the padlocks on the gate, and escape to win the level. The PETAPETA monster from the base game will be chasing you as usual and you’ll hide in school lockers. Check out our PETAPETA base game guide for hiding strategies. Keys are hidden randomly in classrooms on the two floors and once all keys are found and used to unlock padlocks on the main gate, you escape and win the level. Each player can carry only one key. Besides the level being different, here are the main differences from the base game:

  • Skill Tree & Cursed Shards: You have a permanent progression skill tree that uses Cursed Shards. You can find these across the school in almost all rooms or buy them with Robux in the Shop. You’ll use these to unlock permanent upgrades in the Skill Tree. These include stamina buffs, stunning the monster, Shard capacity, auto-looting Shards, etc. They also unlock the two additional difficulty modes.

  • Cursed Shard Capacity: In each run you can only pick up 150 Shards max and you get them all only if you beat the level. You also get your teammates’ Shards if they survive in multiplayer and if you die you only get 20% of what you collected. You can increase the maximum number of Shards you can carry in the Skill Tree.
  • Safe Room & TV Key Clues: You’ll have access to a Safe Room near the escape door where PETAPETA can’t hurt you. This is also where a TV is that will showcase the classroom number where keys are. It activates for the last few keys once you used the first one near the escape door.

  • Replayability: School of Nightmares is all about replaying the same level, farming Shards to get stronger, unlocking new story entries in the Archive, and competing to have the fastest time. Instead of puzzles, it’s about speed and quick decision-making which can be great practice for the base game.

Now I’ll give you some advice to make beating School of Nightmares easier.

PETAPETA School of Nightmares Tips & Tricks

Here are some helpful tips to have in mind while playing PETAPETA School of Nightmares:

  • Lobby Shards: Shards randomly spawn in the lobby so always loot all of them before going for a run.

  • Key Symbols: Each key has a symbol on the handle that matches its appropriate lock.

  • Loop Looping & Maps: The 2-floor layout of the school is always the same and it loops which you can see on various maps across the level which point to your direction. Maps are especially useful when you visit the Safe Room to check the TV for which classroom the key is in. This also means that the monster can loop back to you or stay in a certain part of the school to make the other part safer.
  • Searching For Keys: Always check nearby maps to learn where the nearest staircases are and always be on the look out for hiding spots as you search so that you can quickly hide.
  • PETAPETA Speed: The monster increases in speed as you use the last couple of keys. You’ll get a cutscene “I will never forgive…” when this happens. I recommend that players don’t turn in the last few keys right away but to save them in their inventory until the last one is found and then turn them in all at once.
  • Solo Is Easier: Solo is actually much easier to beat as you’re starting out since you only need three keys. The best strategy is to ignore the starting key and go find the other two and use them. Then finally, use the third key which is right there to escape and win. Make sure to pick up 150 Shards or your upgraded Max to farm Shards.
  • Team Benefits: Playing in a team means more people are looking for keys but you need more keys. It also means you can get your teammate’s Shards if they survive and you win so it’s the best way to farm Shards along with buying Hard Mode for extra Shards. Finally, if you’re using text chat or voice chat, one person can stay in the Safe Room and relay the key locations from the TV to the rest of the team.
  • Hiding Tips: You can hide for as long as you want in this game but I would only hide when you hear PETAPETA’s screams increasing which means she’s getting closer. Otherwise, just continue searching for keys and always keep a locker nearby and in mind so that you can quickly hide if your screen starts shaking. Note that loud footsteps means she’s kind of near you on your floor but not close. When steps turn to screaming, then you should hide.

Best Skills in PETAPETA School of Nightmares

Here are the best skills to go for first in PETAPETA School of Nightmares:

  • Stunning: I would rush to get the first Stun ability in the lower left to disable PETAPETA when you need it. Upgrading stun time and how many times you can stun is better than upgrading range.
  • Shard Capacity: Before upgrading Stun, I would go toward the Shard capacity nodes in the upper right so that you can farm more Shards each run. Don’t rush for Shard attraction since you have a max carry capacity anyway so picking up more Shards is redundant once you reach the max capacity.
  • Hard and Super Hard Modes: These are a great way to increase replayability and how many Shards you get. On Hard mode you get 50% more and on Super Hard you get 100% more Shards.

School of Nightmares Rare Items Guide

If you are going for achievements and additional story page unlocks, then I would try to look for rare items as you’re playing levels. They appear as purple highlighted items and they spawn randomly. There are many different random items you can pick up and you only score them if you win the round and take them to the lobby. They don’t give you anything apart from a single achievement and more story pages to read.

PETAPETA School of Nightmares Hard Mode

You can unlock Hard mode and Super Hard mode in PETAPETA School of Nightmares in the skill tree for 3000 Shards each. Hosting the game in these harder modes makes PETAPETA faster and generally more dangerous. That said, you will also get 50% more shards in Hard mode and Super Hard mode doubles your earned Shards. For example, if you get 150 Shards in a run, on Hard you’ll get 225 and on Super Hard you’ll get 300.
