The official Project M website has been stripped of all download links to the mod.
Project M, the ambitious Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod that adds dozens of balance changes, customization options, and even new characters, has suddenly and immediately halted all development, and cancelled the upcoming 3.61 patch. The official website for the mod has been completely stripped bare, removing all videos, download links, and screenshots related to the mod, and instead offering up a simple notice explaining the situation.
“We’ve made a difficult business decision: We’re ready to finish development here and move on to bigger and better ventures,” said the team. “We realize that this will come as a shock to many of our fans. Please, forgive us.”
“As the PMDev team will be formally disbanded, please forward all official communications regarding Project M to video game attorney and business consultant Ryan Morrison,” it added.
This news should indeed come as a shock, as Project M, despite altering a Nintendo property without the consent of the original developer, has been so far immune to any legal action or cease and desist letters from the company. Quite impressive when you consider it has been in development for six whole years.
Of course, quite a few conspiracy theories have sprung up suggesting that the big N has finally decided to bring the hammer down on Project M behind the scenes, which is what led to this sudden cancellation.
We may never know the full story behind Project M. While I personally didn’t care much for it, I certainly wholeheartedly support the modding community and their right to modify video games.
