Sega and Avalanche Unveil Renegade Ops

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios and Sega are teaming up for Renegade Ops, a new co-op military shooter slated for digital release later this year.

You might think that the world needs a new military shooter about as much as it needs a hole in the head, but Renegade Ops sounds like it might actually bring something different to the party. When Inferno, a madman bent on global domination, bullies the world’s nations into submission with the devastating power of his terrorist army and secret weapon, General Bryant assembles the Renegade Ops, an elite team of military specialists from around the world, and takes up the fight!

Renegade Ops will be playable in single-player mode, two-player split-screen mode or online in four-player co-op battles, and the name of the game is wanton destruction for freedom and democracy. “The IP is all about driving or flying around blowing stuff up while playing with your friends and that to us, is a dream-project,” said Senior Producer Andreas ThorsĆ©n.

It may not be the most original idea ever but a more light-hearted take on the serious business of modern combat might be kind of fun. A bit like a cross between Command & Conquer: Renegade and Call of Duty: Black Ops, maybe? Not sure why I’m making that connection, but it just feels right somehow. Renegade Ops is scheduled to come out later this year on Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Network and various fine PC digital distributors.
