Splatoon 2 Release Date, “Salmon Run” Mode, Revealed

During a Splatoon 2-focused Nintendo direct, Nintendo revealed a number of details about the upcoming shooter.

Splatoon was one of the sleeper hits of the Wii U, so it’s no surprise that the follow-up, Splatoon 2, is one of the most hotly anticipated games of the Nintendo Switch. Previously, Nintendo only gave a “2017” release date, but today, during a Splatoon 2 and ARMS-focused Nintendo Direct, we were given a solid date of July 21.

We also learned a lot of new information about the game. First up was the reveal of a brand-new game mode: Salmon Run. In Salmon Run, increasingly difficult waves of “Salmonid” will periodically attack your team, dropping “Power Eggs” can be used to upgrade your abilities. The goal is simply to last through as many waves as possible. If you’ve ever played a “horde mode” in games like Left 4 Dead or Gears of War, you’ll be familiar with the mechanics.

Next, we learned that Splatoon 2 will be getting its own suite of new amiibo toys. Tapping the amiibo on the Nintendo Switch NFC reader will make the amiibo character appear in-game, where you can use it to save a character’s loadout. This way, you can take the amiibo to a friend’s house and use your saved loadout on their console.
