A family facing foreclosure won’t have to leave their home after all, thanks to a rare comic book find.
In real life, Superman isn’t actually around to save people from a burning building or from a rampaging robot powered by Kryptonite. He is, however, able to save a family from poor economic conditions. When a bank was ready to foreclose on a southern U.S. family due to financial issues, a rare basement find of Action Comics #1 changed everything around.
When the family, that wished to remain anonymous, was packing up belongings from the house that had been inhabited by the wife’s family since the 1950s, they found the book that features the first appearance of Superman. They were facing hard times after taking out a second mortgage to start a new business, which was unsuccessful in the current economy.
The household contacted Stephen Fishler of ComicConnect.com, an online comic marketplace, after discovering that Fishler had brokered sales of two copies of Action Comics #1 earlier this year for $1 million in February and $1.5 million in March. On the comic book condition grading scale of 1 to 10, the family’s copy of Action Comics received a Very Good/Fine rating of 5.0. Fishler expects it to sell for upwards of $250,000.
To protect the family’s home, Fishler had to get on the phone with the bank to explain just how much money the comic could bring in. With only 100 copies of Action Comics #1 believed to exist, 7 have turned up in the past year-and-a-half. It’s nice to see that superheroes really can turn up in the nick of time like this to save people from hardship.
