If you’re looking to lead the life of a thief in The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered, you’ll be looking to pickpocket almost every single citizen in Cyrodiil.
While the act itself is simple, and is exactly how you do it in Skyrim, there are a few factors that affect the outcome whenever you try to pickpocket someone. It’s a crime, so you’ll also be arrested if you get caught in the act.
How to Pickpocket Someone in Oblivion Remastered
To pickpocket an NPC, all you need to do is crouch and approach them from behind. You’ll get the prompt to pick the pockets of the NPC in front of you. When you do so, it’ll open their inventory, and you’ll be able to take whatever you want from them.

However, when you’re engaged in the act, keep in mind the following things:
- The level of your sneak skill.
- How many items you’re trying to steal.
- The value of the items you’re trying to steal.
If you don’t have a high sneak skill, you’re bound to be detected whenever you try to pick someone’s pockets. Interestingly enough, if your Luck attribute is below 50, you might still get detected even if your sneak skill is high.
Tips to Improve Chances of Successful Pickpocket Outcomes in The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered
In general, we recommend having a high sneak skill. To increase this skill, it’s best to crouch and move around all the time. As long as you’re not attacking random NPCs you should be fine. Alternatively, you can always rent an attic at any inn and sneak through a wall. This may sound boring, but it will help you increase your sneak rating quickly.

Your choice of footwear will also affect your ability to sneak properly. So whenever you’re trying to pickpocket someone in Oblivion Remastered, make sure that you’re barefoot or you’re wearing something incredibly light.
Finally, you can switch between first-person and third-person views while exploring Cyrodiil. It’s always better to sneak and pickpocket while in third-person view. It’ll increase your FOV automatically, allowing you to spot nearby enemies who would’ve been hidden in first-person view.
What Happens If You Get Caught While Pickpocketing?
If you fail the pickpocketing skill check in Oblivion Remastered, there are a few repercussions that you’ll have to face:
- You won’t be able to pick pockets for the next 24 hours, so you’ll have to wait it out or you’ll have to load a previous save so that you can reattempt the skill check.
- Depending upon the value of the item, a bounty will be placed on your head, and guards will start looking to arrest you.
- A failed pickpocketing attempt will also lower the disposition of a lot of NPCs, barring a few of them.
If, however, you desperately want to pickpocket an item, but you’re continuously failing at the skill check, using an invisibility potion can always make your life easier.
