As much as that headline sounds like one, it’s not an April Fools’ joke. Developer Snoozy Kazoo has locked down an April 22 launch date for Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion and is celebrating the announcement with a new trailer.
In Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, you’ll take control of (you guessed it) an anthropomorphic turnip whose refusal to pay taxes plunges him into debt that he now has to repay. In doing so, you’ll spend your time unearthing corruption and ultimately revolting against the vegetable government. As you do.
The gameplay in the trailer below looks fairly conventional for an old-school-Zelda-inspired indie adventure. There’s a lot of stabbing and jabbing with melee items, a few examples of ranged attacks, and a couple of big boss beasties that are still somehow utterly adorable. It also seems to be tapping into the farm management craze, requiring you to grow plants that provide you with new weapons and other buffs. The developer insists that the game also has puzzles, dungeons, and multiple endings based on how well you evade your taxes.
It looks like a satirical little piece of work that’s almost guaranteed to raise a chuckle (along with a few eyebrows), but it also looks like a heck of a lot of fun. The game is slated to launch on Steam and Switch later this month.
