A spiral galaxy about 23 million light years away, M106 has two extra spiral arms that glow in X-ray, optical, and radio light.
Spiral galaxy NGC 1433 is roughly 32 million light years away from us, and its bright center is as luminous as our entire galaxy.
The Cygnus Wall is a 10 light-year long ridge within The North America Nebula. The dark shapes are clouds of cool gas and dust, while the bright highlights are atoms being energized by the radiation of young, massive stars.
The Crab Nebula is the remains of a bright supernova seen by Chinese astronomers in 1054. A pulsar at the heart of the nebula, measuring 28-30 km in width, emits pulses of radiation while spinning 30.2 times per second.
Taken from the top of Mount Brokeoff in the Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California, this full spherical panorama captures the glowing arch of the Milky Way visible in the night sky.
This vertical view of the Milky Way in Maui shows a strong contrast between the light of our galaxy’s stars and the cosmic dust that obstructs it.
