Not all movie sequels are made equal, some are better than others. Today we celebrate the sequels that didn’t really add anything good to the series. Hopefully the pointless sequels won’t keep happening, but I wouldn’t hold my breathe waiting for that to occur.
This unnecessary gem, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, was a cash grab that went awry. This was released in 2003 amid an ocean of movies that were very unoriginal and mostly just remakes of television shows from the 70’s and 80’s. Thankfully we’ve progressed past that.
The Matrix was an amazing film, the only issue was that it didn’t really need any sequels, like Matrix: Revolutions. At the end of the original movie you knew that Neo was The One and that he would ultimately have to sacrifice himself for the many others in Zion. Unfortunately the studio, and filmmakers, just wanted more and more money.
The movie that tainted a franchise. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had an amazing cast, with Harrison Ford reprising his role as the title character and Cate Blanchett as the Soviet baddie, it would be hard to screw this up. Unfortunately for everyone involved, and the fans, this was a horrible exercise in what not to do.
Ghostbusters was a spectacular hit, unfortunately it also spawned the downright disappointing sequel. The aptly titled Ghostbusters 2 pitted them against an ancient creature that just wanted to steal a baby. Ultimately the movie performed better than it really should have, but to be fair at the time there wasn’t much to see.
Speed 2: Cruise Control took the main idea from the first film and then made an absurd sequel. I don’t know what happened at the studio when they gave it the go-ahead, but I’m assuming that it had something to do with the fact that they ran out of cocaine and needed more, but couldn’t afford it, so they made this piece of disappointment.
Not all movies need a sequel, 2001’s Donnie Darko definitely didn’t need one, but they still made it. S. Darko wanted us all to follow Donnie’s sister, because her character was so pivotal to the plot, as long as you considered Sparklemotion to be pivotal to the plot. To cap it off, the director of the original, Richard Kelly, has distanced himself as much as possible from this horrible waste of your time.
The cash-grab that was Gremlins 2 picked up where the original Gremlins left off, except not really. What this sequel brought to the table was nothing that anyone wanted to see. If you are a fan of Gremlins, and who isn’t, then you should really be angry and send off some seriously strongly worded letters to the company behind this travesty to humanity.
The original movie The Mask was fun, it didn’t need to get too complicated, because it wasn’t about that, it was about escaping into a movie. Unfortunately the success of the original got some greedy people hungry for more money, this lead to the lowest point in humanity with Son of the Mask. This movie helped cement Jamie Kennedy as a horrible actor and hopefully furthered his descent into obscurity.
