Afterparty Is a Solid Sophomore Effort from the Oxenfree Dev – Review in 3 Minutes

Recommended Videos

Afterparty is a story-driven game by Night School Studio, the studio behind 2016’s Oxenfree. You play as Lola and Milo, two recent college graduates who find themselves in Hell with no idea how they died or why they’re there. Fortunately, Hell has a loophole: If you can beat Satan in a drinking contest, he’ll grant you passage back to the world of the living.

I loved Afterparty’s darkly funny and imaginative story, but I can’t overlook the missed opportunities of its drinking mechanic and the sparse gameplay. If all you want is an engaging character-centered story, it’s worth playing. Just don’t expect much else. Afterparty is available Oct. 29 for $19.99 on Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch release planned for later.
