The film was previously only hinted at during Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel last year, but has now been confirmed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Marvel Studios has reportedly tapped WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell to handle the script. The film will move the action from the mid-1990s to the present day, though specific details about the story and how it fits in with the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe are thin for the time being.

The studio is hoping to release Captain Marvel 2 in 2022, which would put it outside the current slate of Phase Four films, alongside Black Panther 2 and the other project teased by producer Kevin Feige during SDCC.

The co-directors of the first movie, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will not be involved. Instead, Marvel is hoping to tap a female director. Meanwhile, Boden and Fleck are reportedly remaining involved in the MCU via a currently unannounced and unconfirmed new Disney+ series.

Captain Marvel released last year, becoming the fifth-highest grossing film of 2019 by earning more than $1.1 billion worldwide. The film enjoyed a generally strong critical reception, including from Bob Chipman, who wrote “when it’s working, it’s working — and that’s most of the time.”
