Code Vein is an action RPG from Bandai Namco heavily inspired by From Software’s Dark Souls series, which Bandai Namco also published. You possess a broken Blood Code, which is normally a class that would inform your strengths, weaknesses, and skills in combat. This allows you to copy the Blood Codes of other Revenants, picking specific “gifts” to make your own.

Ultimately, I found combat to be really fun and the variety of weapon types encouraged a lot of experimentation. Code Vein combines Dark Souls with the anime genre to great effect. Fans of either will find something to like, but fans of both will find something to love.

  1. We are born of the blood, Made men by the Blood, Undone by the Blood. Seriously, I haven’t heard the word “Blood” so much since Bloodborne.

  2. Nice that there’s finally a reviewer at The Escapist who doesn’t go all Greta Thunberg or Robin Williams with his reviews. Though I do enjoy Yahtzee’s reviews, it’s hard to consider them authoritative after the third metaphor 0.5 seconds in.

    1. Yahtzee is not so much a reviewer, but a critic. Both have their right to exist and can be appreciated side by side.

      1. I’ve found his criticism to be a more accurate review of any given game than any review given by any “game journalist.” Especially regarding Psychonauts.
