Devil’s Third On Track to Come Out in 2014, Says Itagaki

After 18 months without a publisher, the mysterious Devil’s Third still lives on.

No one in their right mind is expecting a lot from Devil’s Third. Ninja Gaiden creator Tomonobu Itagaki’s upcoming project has been operating without the support of a publisher since it was dropped by fatally bleeding publisher THQ in May, 2012. Despite the game’s subdued (read: nonexistent) media profile and apparent lack of publishing support, Itagaki says the game is still coming together. In fact, he says Devil’s Third may even be ready for release in 2014.

According to Siliconera, Itagaki says the game is “80 percent complete” and just needs “a little more polishing.”

“Next year will be the year we’ll be releasing the console game Devil’s Third,” Itagaki told 4Gamer. “At the moment, it is about 80% complete, and we can about see the end of it. However, there’s still a little more polishing that needs to be done. That’s also one of the reasons I’ve decided to work independently.”

After losing support from THQ, the rights and assets for Devil’s Third reverted back to developer Valhalla Game studios, allowing the team to continue working on the project. Though Itagaki has occasionally popped up to assure fans the project is still alive and kicking – he confirmed the game was still development back in May – word on the game has been almost nonexistent. Valhalla had not secured a publisher for the game at that time.

Knowing that the long silences and extraordinary odds would be enough to shake the confidence of even his most adoring fans, Itagaki apologized for keeping people in the dark:

“For you fans out there, I’d like to apologize for making you worry,” he said. “We’ll be going all out next year, so please look forward to it.”
