According to a new report from Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier, BioWare’s untitled Dragon Age 4 will now be a single-player RPG experience. People familiar with the project say that Electronic Arts (EA) has chosen to remove all multiplayer aspects from the game, as it was originally planned to be a service title.
The major shift for Dragon Age comes as a result of the success of the strictly single-player game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the commercial failure of the online service title Anthem. The former has continued to receive updates, even now being available on Steam, as well as Xbox Game Pass Ultimate via its partnership with EA Play. Contrast that with the latter, where it was announced yesterday that development on Anthem Next had been canceled.
Reportedly during development, some members of BioWare’s leadership fought to make the next Dragon Age game single-player-only. Due to the failure surrounding Anthem, it seems like EA came around and allowed that to happen. A small team of around 30 people was working on Anthem Next but now will transition to working on the next Dragon Age. It is currently unknown if this affects development on the next Mass Effect game either.
