n-Space will be bringing its cooperative RPG Dungeons & Dragons: Sword Coast Legends to PS4 and Xbox One in late 2015.
Back in February, n-Space announced that it was working on a new video game entry in the Dungeons & Dragons franchise: Dungeons & Dragons: Sword Coast Legends. Promising a deep RPG experience, including a “Dungeon Master Mode” aimed at delivering the most authentic D&D experience of any video game to date, it left many gamers eager to give its take on cooperative role-playing a try. The only problem was that it was going to be exclusive to computers, automatically gating off a large portion of the gaming community. Luckily for console gamers, that’s no longer the case. According to a recent announcement from director Dan Tudge, the studio will now also be bringing the game to the PS4 and Xbox One.
Speaking about the decision, Tudge affirmed that it was based on fan feedback. While n-Space received a number of positive responses from PC, Mac and Linux gamers excited about Sword Coast Legends, the studio apparently also received a deluge of messages from console gamers upset that they wouldn’t be getting a version. Not wanting to ignore such a sizable audience, the studio opted to re-examine the title and see if there was any way to make it work smoothly outside of the realm of mice and keyboards. “We circled back and figured out how to do it without compromising our vision for PC gamers,” said Tudge. “This addition to our existing PC, Mac, and Linux versions ensures gamers will be able to have that classic D&D experience whenever, wherever, and however they want.”
That console gamers would want their own version isn’t surprising. In addition to its unique Dungeon Master Mode, there are already plans to bring future adventures from the D&D tabletop RPG to Sword Coast Legends. An expansion based on the upcoming adventure Rage of Demons, for instance, was recently confirmed to be coming to the video game. In other words, RPG fans who have trouble finding the time to roll dice with their friends could potentially use Sword Coast Legends as a digital substitute. What remains to be seen, of course, is how well the game will translate to consoles and what the addition of PS4 and Xbox One editions might cost the PC version. While Tudge has said that n-Space has found a way to develop the ports without “comprising” anything from the PC, Mac and Linux versions, it goes without saying that such promises aren’t something developers are always able to deliver on.
Dungeons & Dragons: Sword Coast Legends will release for PC, Mac and Linux on September 8th. The console versions will follow later this year.
