netflix mark miller millarworld supercrooks canceled jupiters legacy season 2 jupiter's legacy

That’s a wrap for Jupiter’s Legacy. Netflix’s first foray into the Millarworld comics is not getting a second season, according to a report from Deadline. Instead of making Jupiter’s Legacy season 2, the streamer is now planning on producing another live-action show based in the same universe called Supercrooks. The series will be based on another Millarworld comic that focuses on the villains of the universe that Jupiter’s Legacy takes place in. The move shows that Netflix is interested in turning its contract with Mark Millar to adapt his comics into an interconnected universe for at least some of the shows it’s making based on his comics.

Netflix has let Jupiter’s Legacy‘s high-profile cast’s contracts basically expire, meaning that, for now, Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, and Ben Daniels will no longer be involved with the shows. However, Millar says that he’s sure he’ll return to the series in some form later.

Mark Millar provided a long statement about Supercrooks and no season 2 for Jupiter’s Legacy:

I’m really proud of what the team achieved with Jupiter’s Legacy and the amazing work everyone did on that origin season. I’ve been asked a lot about what we’re planning next with this world, and the answer is to see what the supervillains are getting up to. I’ve always loved crime stories, from Scorsese to Tarantino, and supervillains are always the most fun part of any superhero story. To do something exclusively focused on the villains they fight just feels incredibly fresh as we explore what it’s like to be a bad guy in a world crawling with good guys who want to put you in jail.

Jupiter’s Legacy is a vast and rich space with lots of characters to mine, and so I’m happy to share that our next step here is a live-action version of the Supercrooks comic I created with Leinil Francis Yu a few years back. Given where we’re going next, we’ve made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter’s Legacy saga. We’re confident we’ll return to it later and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great.

This obviously wasn’t the plan for Jupiter’s Legacy, as the actors were all in contracts for more series, but it isn’t clear why Netflix, which doesn’t share ratings often, and Millar are veering away. The show was a prestige piece of Netflix’s content, pushed heavily, and received decent reviews, but the cost may have outweighed a return and Netflix may have decided to pivot in a new direction with its Millarworld content, which it is reportedly still excited about.

As for Supercrooks, it’s being touted as a heist series, which involves a ragtag group of villains who join together to pull off the biggest heist in history. The gang includes supervillains, petty crooks, and other assorted ne’er-do-wells and sounds like it will lean into the noir themes of the world of crime pretty heavily. While set in the same world as Jupiter’s Legacy, it isn’t clear if any of the characters from the series will appear in Supercrooks. Interestingly, Netflix is also still developing an anime based on Supercrooks as well. Whether or not the two will be directly connected isn’t clear.
