What if you took the creepy moon plummeting towards the planet from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and gave it to disaster movie auteur Roland Emmerich? The result is Moonfall, which just released its announcement teaser trailer today and is full of the earth getting completely destroyed by our friendly little satellite. Like, straight up wrecked.
What Moonfall will inevitably lack in logic, common sense, and smart people doing smart things, it looks to entirely make up for by cramming the screen full of the earth being torn apart by floods, earthquakes, large chunks of moon rock, and, possibly, aliens. The plot is like an amalgamation of every disaster film ever made. The moon is mysteriously knocked out of orbit, sending it hurtling towards Earth. Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) believes she has a solution if only she could get anyone to listen. But they won’t, of course, so she turns to a fellow astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson), and conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley) to execute her plan… IN SPACE! But it turns out that the moon may not be what we all think it is. So basically, the Moonfall teaser trailer has quite a lot of teasing to do.
Emmerich wrote the screenplay alongside Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen, who both have experience with crafting cliche disaster films. They look to be stapling together every aspect of their previous work into this glorious explosion of a film, based on the Moonfall teaser trailer. The movie also stars Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak, and Donald Sutherland.
Of course, a film that is literally just everyone dying until someone blows something up enough to stop them all from dying has to be seen in theaters, so Moonfall will be getting a theatrical-only release on February 4, 2022.
