With most of the film industry struggling to release a movie at all and the majority of streaming platforms just trying to figure out how to function, Netflix has decided to flex its muscle a bit, announcing that it’ll be releasing a new film (or more) every damn week throughout 2021. The streamer released a teaser for a host of its upcoming movies alongside a list of 70 films it has scheduled to drop this year, and that doesn’t include any movies it may buy the rights to stream or anything it hasn’t announced yet.
It’s a daunting slate of films that hits every algorithmic genre you could possibly imagine. You’ve got the star-studded action blockbuster Red Notice with Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, and Dwayne Johnson (no released date); the western The Harder They Fall with Regina King and Idris Elba; the zombie heist movie Army of the Dead from Zack Snyder; the sci-fi film Escape from Spiderhead with Chris Hemsworth; the serious black-and-white drama Malcolm & Marie; the rom-com threequels The Kissing Booth 3 and To All the Boys: Always and Forever; the family-friendly film YES DAY; and more holiday films than should legally be allowed to release on one streaming platform. It is, in short, a colossal list of films that should have at least one movie that would appeal to someone.
That’s exactly what Netflix needs for 2021 and beyond. With its licensed shows fleeing back to the rights owners as other streaming platforms open, the streamer is kicking out original content as fast as it can to keep everyone interested in staying. It might not have Marvel movies anymore, but it’s got all the actors in them in other, big-budget action films. It may not be streaming Oscar classics from other studios anymore, but it’ll release as many of its own Oscar hopefuls as it can. If there is anyone else currently competing with Netflix for the rom-com crown, they’re not doing a very good job of it, and if Netflix is going to lose all of Disney’s kids, fair — then it’ll just make its own.
Most of the films listed do not have release dates as Netflix keeps these close to the vest until about a month before the movie drops usually, but there’s a good lineup of movies landing through January and February already. In a year that is quickly shaping up to look a lot like last year in terms of film releases, Netflix is once again positioning itself to be the savior of cinema.
