New Predator Movie Will Be Prequel with Female Lead, Might Be PG-13

Poor Predator. It just can’t get a good movie made, but that isn’t stopping 20th Century Studios (aka Disney) from trying again. Dan Trachtenberg has been hard at work filming a new Predator movie, which Collider learned will be called Skull, and it’s almost done shooting. The film’s producers, John Davis and John Fox, revealed that the film is going back to basics, with a story of survival as it tells how the first Predator came to Earth.

“It goes back to what made the original Predator movie work,” Davis explained of the approach to the film. “It’s the ingenuity of a human being who won’t give up, who’s able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force.”

As an origin story, the film will be taking place long before the days of Arnold letting everyone know that if it bleeds they can kill it. The producers were mum on just how far in the past we’re going, but they say it’s definitely “early.” Whenever and wherever the new Predator takes place, the hero will be a woman (seemingly Amber Midthunder) who likely must match her wits against the Predator’s overwhelming technology, much like the original film’s take and less like the plethora of movies afterward that saw the franchise attempt to expand out from the one-on-one hunting game.

“It actually has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon. You’ll know what I mean once you see it,” said Fox, daring to connect a Predator film to an Oscar-nominated classic that nearly killed Leonardo DiCaprio. Most likely, he’s referring to the desperate struggle for survival that film portrayed, and honestly, that’s kind of an awesome fit for a Predator movie.

Some less than exciting news is that the movie could end up being PG-13, as Davis noted that it just depends on how it gets cut. The film was conceived as R-rated, but after watching dailies he said it could “easily” turn into a PG-13 film. Although Skull is surprisingly almost done, this new Predator doesn’t have a release date yet.
