Nintendo Patent Points to (Another) VR Headset

Nintendo’s Labo VR kit released earlier this year, but judging by this recently discovered patent, the company might already have plans for another VR headset in the future.

Discovered by LetsGoDigital, the patent looks to be something separate from Labo VR. For starters, though the accessory looks like it might work similarly to Labo VR, there does not seem to be any cardboard in sight.

The report says that the patent — described as a “3D image display system and 3D image display device” — was published on the site on Aug. 22, 2019. Though this new device seems to be made of a sturdier material than Labo products, it still lacks any sort of headband.

Some of Nintendo’s existing titles have received updates to support Labo VR. Some games like Super Mario Odyssey got an update with Labo VR-exclusive “mini-missions,” while support for other games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate simply included a new viewing option for offline battles.

More VR in Nintendo’s future is probably a ways off, so for now, all we can expect from these images is a headset that looks wildly awkward.

Nintendo just cannot help itself when it comes to out-of-left-field announcements, as the company recently teased a new circle-type fitness device only a day after revealing a sequel to the cult classic Deadly Premonition. If there is anything we can count on, it is Nintendo eventually having a ridiculous trailer to pair with this new VR headset if it ever sees the light of day.
