PlatinumGames Reveals Project G.G., a Giant Hero-Based Action Game

PlatinumGames has revealed its new project, codenamed Project G.G., with a teaser trailer. Hideki Kamiya is taking up the mantle of director for the first time since 2013’s The Wonderful 101, and Atsushi Inaba is producer.

Project G.G. will utilize a hero aesthetic and be the “powerful climax” of Kamiya’s hero trilogy following The Wonderful 101 and Viewtiful Joe, though the main conceit will apparently center around a boy who can transform into a giant to battle giant monsters.

Kamiya said to Famitsu that the project is pushing beyond the confines of the action genre: “While its feel as an action game is important, it is not a game solely focused on action.” Inaba supported that comment, saying that the game will challenge the expectations of what fans expect from the studio.

According to that interview, Project G.G. is currently in the early stages of development, with PlatinumGames set to increase its staff numbers in the coming months. No release window was mentioned, but Inaba said that the team hopes “to launch on all existing platforms.”

Project G.G. is the second of the “Platinum 4,” a new set of games currently in development at the respected studio. The Wonderful 101: Remastered was the first project to form part of the initiative.

However, the team’s already announced games, Bayonetta 3 and Babylon’s Fall, may not count among the four, as Inaba mentioned that at least one of the two remains under wraps: “The last one is a secret. We’re doing something very Platinum and interesting.”
