Resident Evil Village, PlayStation 5, Sony, Capcom, next-gen

Resident Evil Village (aka Resident Evil 8) has been revealed to be the next installment of Capcom’s survival horror franchise and is coming to next-gen consoles. The game was announced during Sony’s PlayStation 5 event with a cryptic trailer, revealing the return of playable protagonist Ethan Winters, a now-menacing Chris Redfield, werewolves (yes, werewolves), a first-person perspective, and a 2021 release date. Watch the atmospheric trailer for yourself below.

Resident Evil Village looks to continue the unsettling tone set in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Capcom posted a developer message on its YouTube channel revealing more gameplay details to expect when the game launches next year. As you might have guessed, Village takes advantage of the latest version of the RE Engine, but Capcom also revealed that this next game will be more action-oriented than the previous game. Time will tell if more action is the right call, though the studio also says that the game features no load times and a new inventory system.

Resident Evil Village is still being treated as Resident Evil 8, as the roman numeral “VIII” kind of appears in the word “Village.” Alongside taking place a few years after Resident Evil 7, the team says that the village itself plays such a crucial role that it is essentially its own character. Capcom promises to share more by the end of summer.

A number of rumors that surfaced through the past few months suggested the game would indeed feature werewolves, Ethan, and the return of Chris Redfield. A more recent rumor managed to accurately state this eighth installment’s name.

Sony went all out for today’s next-gen showcase, revealing Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and, perhaps mostly importantly, the design of the PlayStation 5.

Resident Evil Village launches for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X in 2021.
