Silicon Knights Head Decries Game Subsidy Inequities

Silicon Knights founder Denis Dyack lamented the way government subsidies are pulling good developers away from Ontario to Quebec.

The 160-person company that created Too Human is suffering from what Dyack called a “brain drain” of qualified employees after their graduation from local schools, Dyack asserted.

“Because all of our universities and colleges are subsidized by the government, what we’re doing is training all of these people, educating them, and then they’re leaving,” he said. “We’ve got to stop that.”

Montreal houses a Ubisoft studio, EA development houses and an Eidos office, on the back of subsidized that Dyack claims maintains 50 to 60 percent of employees’ salaries.

“The subsidies in Quebec are, well, insane,” he said at one point. “It’s costing the government a ton of money and the payback is uncertain.”
