Solo: A Star Wars Story Jon Kasdan screenwriter says Solo sequel not happening, no plans amid Disney+

Solo Screenwriter Says the Sequel That Wasn’t Happening Still Isn’t Happening

There is a small but dedicated section of the Star Wars fanbase that has been hoping for a sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Han Solo prequel film. Whether it’s because they liked the first one or they hope a second one would give a promising cast a better shot at success, the likelihood of their wish coming true is less than zero, as has recently been reiterated by the film’s co-writer, Jon Kasdan.

As you can see, Kasdan replied to a question on Twitter about a possible sequel to Solo with, “Don’t think anyone’s pursuing a Solo sequel at the moment … I think a feature, at this point, would be a tough sell & the (Disney+) Star Wars slate is really…pretty packed, all shows I’m lookin forward to.”

This shouldn’t come as a devastating blow to anyone who is paying attention. Solo had a troubled production, with Disney kicking out the film’s directors and replacing them with Ron Howard while shooting was going on. The movie then debuted to poor critical reception and a box office that Disney felt was underwhelming. The planned trilogy of films focusing on Han and Chewbacca was scrapped entirely. In fact, the film triggered Disney’s then-CEO Bob Iger to announce that the company was taking a pause on its approach to Star Wars and reevaluating its plan to release a host of origin story films.

Things only got worse with the critical and fan reception to the wholly underwhelming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which put a disappointing nail into Disney’s so-called Skywalker Saga. As Kasdan points out, most of Disney’s efforts are now targeted towards Disney+, where The Mandalorian has been a smash hit and actually managed to capture the cultural zeitgeist with its stoic hero and adorable baby Yoda.

The sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story has no release date and never will.
