Subnautica: Below Zero Unknown Worlds next game new interview Dave Kalina project lead

Subnautica Developer Unknown Worlds ‘Looking at New Genres’ for Next Game

Subnautica: Below Zero launches tomorrow, but developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment is already experimenting and planning its next game. Speaking with The Escapist in a new interview, project lead David Kalina explained that the team is looking at “new worlds” to explore in the future and has started to “poke around” with some new, early-stage project ideas. Kalina further added that Unknown Worlds has a project that is “looking at new genres” outside of the crafting-based survival gameplay we’ve seen thus far.

“I don’t think we want to just be like a one-trick pony,” Kalina said. “There is another project at the studio, which hasn’t been announced, that’s a little bit further along as well. So that’s, you know, in a totally different space. It’ll be interesting to see how people react.”

It’s unclear if future projects will have any relation to the Subnautica series, though Kalina added that he feels confident that “there will be more Subnautica someday.” As for Subnautica: Below Zero, he says that Unknown Worlds will continue to provide post-launch support after it launches tomorrow for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S.

You can watch the entire conversation with Kalina below. Toward the end, at 24:50, you can hear the project lead’s comments about Unknown Worlds’ next game and its mysterious new genre.
