The First Trailer For Seth Rogen’s Sausage Party Is Demented

Seth Rogen’s tale about animated sentient sausages looks to put the ‘R’ in Pixar.

Because we live in a world where Seth Rogen can apparently do no wrong, it was announced all the way back in 2010 that the Neighbors star and writing partner Evan Goldberg would be teaming up yet again to bring us an R-rated animated film about talking sausages, not-so-subtly titled Sausage Party. Suffice it to say, no one really knew what to make of the news, and most just attributed it to one of Rogen’s stonery musings that probably wouldn’t ever see the light of day.

In 2014, however, The Wrap broke the story that not only would this long-gestating project actually be coming to fruition, but that the likes of Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, James Franco and Salma Hayek had signed on to voice characters in the film, which I feel compelled to reiterate is about talking sausages.

This week, we’ve been given our first look at what to expect from Sausage Party via a full-length red band trailer. The film’s official description goes like so:

“Sausage Party is about one sausage leading a group of supermarket products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they become chosen to leave the grocery store.”

While certainly bonkers in it’s own right, it’s not a plot that sounds all that more ridiculous than “a talking rat who dreams of becoming a five-star chef,” right? It’s basically Toy Story, but with food! The thing is, this being a Seth Rogen production and all, Sausage Party is one of the first Pixar-style animated movies exclusively catered toward the 18+ audience. The amount of f-bombs dropped in this trailer alone argues that Sausage Party may very well attempt to break the dubious swearing record achieved by Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

As for the story itself, well…it seems pretty twisted, and features one of the best Saving Private Ryan gags I’ve ever seen in the long, long history of Saving Private Ryan gags. So it’s got that going for it.

Joining Rogen, Wiig, and Hill will be the vocal talents of Bill Hader, Michael Cera, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, and perhaps most surprisingly, Edward Norton. Sausage Party hits theaters on August 12th.
