The Mortal Kombat Reboot Film Has Been Delayed Until COVID Abates

The film industry right now is standing on its feet wobbling back and forth as the announcer’s voice says, “Finish him.” The latest button press of the drawn-out finishing move combo? The Mortal Kombat reboot film is on indefinite hold until the pandemic is over and theaters open back up. The film’s producer, Todd Garner, confirmed the news on Twitter.

This probably isn’t too surprising to anyone at all, but there had been no official word on the film itself until now, despite the fact that it was scheduled to land on Jan. 15, 2021. Garner seems to allude to the fact that they are still doing reshoots on the film, as they’ve been given this extra time, but also says that we won’t even get to see a trailer for the film until the pandemic calms down and theaters reopen. Of course, it’s not clear when that will be with cases rising across the U.S., so it could be a very long time before we get to see Scorpion’s spear grab actually rip through someone’s chest on the big screen.

This Mortal Kombat film is confirmed to be R-rated and is looking to shake up the franchise with James Wan producing and relative newcomer Simon McQuoid directing. The cast includes Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han / Sub-Zero, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, Josh Lawson as Kano, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, and Elissa Cadwell as Nitara.
