Torchlight III Is Lacking in What Makes an Action RPG Great – Review in 3 Minutes

Recommended Videos

Torchlight III from Echtra Games is an action RPG set a century after the events of Torchlight II. It is up to you to hack and slash your way through various maps to defend the people of Novastraia from the Netherim invasion.

Gameplay lacks the compelling satisfaction that makes the ARPG genre so appealing. Skill upgrades and equipping better gear never really felt like they made a significant impact on anything except my survivability. Combat encounters drag on, slowing down the pace to an uncomfortable speed. Boss battles are unmemorable. No bosses or encounters stand out and each of them requires the same lengthy tactics employed during regular combat.

Beyond having a cutesy exterior, Torchlight III does little to stand apart from the crowd. The gameplay may be weak compared to its competitors, but that doesn’t make it a bad game — just an okay one. Newcomers to the genre may find some great value here, but veterans will need to look elsewhere for their loot-seeking thrills.

Torchlight III is available now for $39.99 on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 and will launch on Nintendo Switch on Oct. 22.
