The creators of the Teen Choice Awards are bringing their populist awards show format to video games with the inaugural Gamers’ Choice Awards, which will air from 5-6 p.m. Dec. 9 EST on CBS.
This is the first awards show dedicated to gaming and esports to air on network television and the only gaming awards show where the winners are entirely chosen by fans, who can vote through Dec. 1 at gamerschoice.tv. Kids under 13 can vote at gamerschoice.tv/vote-junior.aspx. The show will be hosted by Carrie Keagan, former host of VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live, and Twitch Studios director Marcus Graham. More than 1.5 million votes had been cast as of Nov. 28.
Categories are divided into gaming (favorite games across a wide variety of genres along with top systems, streamers and conventions), esports (games, hosts and teams) and pop culture (celebrity gamers, voice actors and characters). There are a lot of awards to dole out so I wouldn’t expect long acceptance speeches from Kratos or Marshmello. I’ll be casting my vote for Vin Diesel, who I’ve dreamed of playing D&D with for years.
