Wonder Woman 1984 to Release Simultaneously in Cinemas & HBO Max

Wonder Woman 1984 release date Christmas December 25, 2020 theaters HBO Max

Warner Bros. has reaffirmed its planned Dec. 25 release date for DC film sequel Wonder Woman 1984. However, as many cinemas are still closed as a result of the ongoing COVID pandemic, the film will also launch simultaneously on the HBO Max streaming service in the United States at no additional cost to subscribers.

It follows news from last week that the studio was weighing whether to delay the film yet again or release it on HBO Max alongside theaters. Obviously, Warner Bros. ultimately chose the latter.

In a statement via Deadline, Toby Emmerich, the chair of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said, “We appreciate how patient audiences have been and given the great anticipation around Wonder Woman 1984 we are grateful to be able to make this terrifically entertaining movie widely available in these challenging times.” Additionally, the movie will open internationally on Dec. 16 wherever theaters are open.

Wonder Woman 1984 joins several other high-profile films to be made available via home entertainment at the same time as or without a theatrical release this year, including Soul and the live-action Mulan remake from Disney and Universal’s Trolls World Tour.

The original Wonder Woman remains one of the highest-grossing and most critically acclaimed films from the DC Extended Universe stable. The director of both of these films, Patty Jenkins, has voiced her joy that 1984 will finally release.
