Here are some of the notable matchups for the second round of competitors:

Valve Corporation vs. BioWare

Valve beat out the now defunct Irrational Games in the first round. More of a bye round for Valve but now they’re up against the powerhouse that is BioWare. Both of these companies have proven themselves to millions of gamers. Valve has built a following with the Half Life series and the Portal Series, but in 2013 they came out with their popular Dota 2. They’re not just about games as they’ve launched one of the most popular game distribution sites in Steam, pretty good for a company that doesn’t have a boss.

BioWare, on the other hand, has created some of the most iconic games in the twenty years. From Baldur’s Gate to their most recent release Star Wars: The Old Republic – Rise of the Hutt Cartel, which is an expansion on their massive MMO. Do not count them out, they’re still a massive competitor in this March Mayhem.

Lucas Pope vs. Galactic Cafe

Lucas Pope, yeah just one person, made the very popular game Papers, Please and came in a close second to Last of Us in the 2013 Reader’s Choice Game of the Year. Which is pretty damned good for a game created and developed by a single person? He’s not new to the game, he has worked on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for Naughty Dog. This is his foray into the developing world alone, and he’s done well.

On the other hand you have the developer of the smash hit The Stanley Parable, Galactic Cafe. What started as a mod for Valve’s Source engine has turned into one of the best games of 2013. Galactic Cafe was created by modders Davey Wreden and William Pugh, who took home the big prize at the Independent Games Festival and maybe, just maybe, they’ll take home the whole shebang with March Mayhem. They’ve already won over the critics, like our own Jim Sterling, which can be quite a feat in this age of blockbuster games.

Telltale Games vs. Double Fine

Telltale Games is one of the most recognizable names in development with their wildly successful adaptation of The Walking Dead series, and now with their release of The Wolf Among Us, they’re taking over a bigger piece of the gaming pie. They aren’t going to be a pushover, so prepare for a fight.

2013 was a good year for Double Fine, they came out with the popular The Cave, that put you in the position of learning about some very complex characters while they make their way through tunnels and corridors. They’re just trying to find some sort of closure. In 2012 they blew everyone away with their Kickstarter success, which spawned the game Broken Age, whose first act was very well received by critics and fans alike. Don’t count them out, you can always do your part and vote to make sure that they aren’t down for the count.
