Destiny 2 fan predicts ‘Eclipse’ abilities in 2026, and it makes too much sense: ‘Spinfoil hats on’

Destiny 2’s Renegades expansion has undone some of the damage done by the systemic changes that arrived alongside Edge of Fate in July, but there’s a long journey to go for Guardians.

The game has a big 2026 schedule that includes two expansions, two ‘Major Updates’, and a variety of events sprinkled in between. After fans bemoaned the location-specific abilities on Kepler and the Lawless Frontier, one fan has picked through Bungie’s comments in recent months and suggested the studio might not make the same mistake again.

Spoiler alert: Before we begin, some of the content below ties into the events of Renegades. I’d recommend finishing that expansion if you haven’t yet!

Destiny 2 to get Eclipse abilities in 2026?

Acknowledging that there’s definitely more than a slight element of “tinfoil hat” theorizing here, Saint_Victorious posted on the Destiny subreddit with evidence that Bungie could be ready to jettison the idea of abilities that can only be used on specific locations.

“You should expect to see more of that stuff in the future,” Robbie Stevens, Assistant Game Director on Destiny 2, told TheGamer when asked about abilities that can be used elsewhere.

“A lot of the focus this year, the destinations themselves, was through the lens of how we can do things or break rules that we couldn’t if it was in the entire game.”

In a follow-up conversation between Alison Luhrs, Destiny 2’s Narrative Director, and Destiny 2 lore expert MyNameIsByf, Luhrs suggested that Eclipse energy (the kind wielded to destroy Guardians in Renegades) can actually increase a Guardian’s power in new ways.

“They enable the conditions where paracausality can thrive. And those conditions can be turned all the way up, and they can be turned all the way down,” Luhrs says at around 14 minutes.

So how would that manifest? That’s where Tyson Green comes in. Destiny 2’s Game Director doesn’t appear often, but in his chat with Mactics, he suggests that adding the Transcendance mechanic (introduced alongside the Prismatic subclass in The Final Shape) to other subclasses could be on the cards.

Is there a chance that Void, Solar, and Arc subclasses gain access to their own special grenades and abilities? Could that extend to Stasis and Strand? Or is Eclipse that long-rumored third darkness subclass we’ll gain access to?

It’s hard to say, but Saint_Victorious might be onto something here. Bungie revamped the Light subclasses to bring them in line with Stasis with 3.0 overhauls for Arc, Solar, and Void, but we’ve since seen Strand and Prismatic added. Is it time for a 4.0 update with a Transcendance-like mechanic?

With two expansions in 2026, we hopefully won’t have long to find out.
