Bungie leaker suggests Destiny 3 is in ‘extremely early development’ as Sony looks to make its money back

While Destiny 2’s Renegades expansion is launching next week, a new report from a leaker has suggested that Destiny 3 could be in “extremely early development”.

That comes via longtime Destiny 2 dataminer Colony Deaks, who posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the sequel to the 2017 game is being worked on in its earliest stages.

Destiny 3 reportedly in early development at Bungie

“Yes, Destiny 3 is in extremely early development,” the post explains.

“Some of you may have seen a tweet early this afternoon that mentioned that. We have been sitting on the info for a few weeks now and wanted to wait to talk about this seeing as it is in such an early state, and it just sucks to see others post about it carelessly for free internet points.”

“We plan to share more info in the coming months as we wait on the larger scale things to develop and take shape. Sit tight.”

Naturally, Bungie hasn’t said anything just yet. The studio is currently working on the current Destiny 2 story saga, which will see a new expansion next week in Renegades, while also working on the delayed Marathon reboot.

Destiny 2 Renegades Dredgen

While many in the Destiny 2 community have suggested that Destiny 3 feels like a necessity because of the tangled mess of systems and currencies that the current game has become, it’s likely a third game would mean players starting from scratch – something that was contentious with Destiny 2.

Colonel Deaks has previously revealed information about other Bungie projects that has been verified, but given there are a multitude of gaming projects that don’t get to release, there’s every chance Bungie decides against Destiny 3 further down the line.

In a follow-up post, the account suggested the third game would be “around a 5 year goal”.

Other unsubstantiated rumors have included a ‘Destiny Classic’, which could bring back elements from the first game, or retrofit the launch version of Destiny 2’s Red War campaign into the current game.

Sony acquired Bungie in July 2022, but it’s been widely reported that the company is looking to assimilate the studio and remove some of its autonomy after multiple Marathon delays and an art plagiarism scandal, as well as Destiny 2’s player count dropping heavily since Edge of Fate in July of this year.
