Gamers frustrated with limited-time Realism Mode coming to Division 2

In celebration of Division’s 10th anniversary, Massive is introducing Realism Mode. It’s a long-awaited game mode that gamers believe will revitalize Division 2. Unfortunately, it’s only a limited-time event.

Realism Mode was announced during Japan’s FPSDay Celebration, where the game’s creative director Yannick Banchereau described it as an action-focused combat mode with “reduced time-to-kill and realistic weapon damage based on bullet caliber.” To add to the realism, the mode will also have longer cooldowns for skills, less ammo, a limited HUD, and no health regeneration.

When fans of Division 2 first heard of this mode, they were quick to get excited. However, the announcement came with some sombering news: Realism Mode will be available only during the anniversary season in March. It will also only be available to gamers who own the Warlords of New York expansion, since Realism Mode will only be on the New York map.

There was a strong reaction to this news, with gamers demanding that developers keep it as a permanent game mode.

“I would love for this mode to be permanent,” one player said on Reddit. “It sounds amazing, and I’ll definitely play it, but I’ll probably stop after the deactivation.”

“I am excited for this, but getting so tired of all of these game modes and added mechanics being seasonally limited,” another added. “I feel like we are just beta testing game mechanics for Division 3 at this point and [I’m] losing interest in logging on to test these ideas every season and then not having any of them remain afterwards.”

Division 3 is most definitely in the works, with Ubisoft announcing the sequel back in 2023. However, no release date (or any update at all) has been given ever since. All we know is that it will be a “monster.” Maybe that includes a permanent Realism Mode?

What is Realism Mode in Division 2?

For now, gamers will be able to play Realism Mode for a limited time in Division 2, starting in a few months. Maybe, if it’s a hit, developers will add it to Division 3.

The purpose of Realism Mode is to create a more immersive and intense experience for more hardcore players. It will be less forgiving, offering less ammo and no health regeneration.

Players will also get to access to a new character slot that’s only for Realism Mode. This character will not gain XP or levels, which gamers have responded positively to. Instead, this character will feature horizontal progression. New weapons and gear can also be unlocked throughout the Warlords of New York campaign.

With no map and no hit indicators during combat, Realism Mode will require a lot more insight, skill, and knowledge. This kind of gameplay has been a massive hit with shooter fans in ARC Raiders, where players must pay close attention to how enemies behave rather than staring at a dwindling health bar to determine how close they are to death. Body, leg, and arm shots will be less effective, while headshots and weak points are guaranteed kills.

It sounds brutal, but it’s what Division 2 players have been begging for. Unfortunately, they’ll only have the game mode for a few weeks.
