Fellowship is a game currently in its limited open beta weekend. With a game dedicated to MMO-like dungeon content and smart marketing to the WoW player base, the game has blown up a fair amount in recent days. So much so that the open beta is now facing server queues for its launch day, continuing into day 2, and likely the weekend.
The server queue for the EU region last night peaked at around 3,000. And it’s not just a filter, it’s a hard queue. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the WoW Classic server queue reaching several thousand and going down really slowly. If you’re trying to get on at peak time, be aware that it can take upwards of an hour to sift through the queue. So have something else on at the side while you wait.
Also, the servers are going on and offline while the developers patch in fixes to the game. The server queue, as it stands, is related to database inefficiencies. The database servers are overwhelmed with requests, and they are struggling with the demand. The developers are looking to spin up more servers and really stress their database infrastructure and code to optimize it for the rest of the weekend. This has since made the game more stable, with fewer server queues and a similar number of players on the Open Beta.
This is exactly what an open beta is for though – testing the ability for players to get into the game. SteamDB says that there are about 15,000 players trying to access the open beta on and off over the last day or so. For an indie studio and an open beta on non-peak times before the weekend, that’s a lot of players. The game is getting more popular by the weekend. As it stands, the server queues seem lower with more people in-game. It’s a sign that feedback is helpful, and the developers over in Sweden are doing well to get the servers more and more ready for the demand of the beta, and of course, the launch.
