Massive ScummVM update now supports nearly 200 retro adventure games

Despite launching way back in 2001, classic adventure game software, ScummVM, is still seeing updates. Yes, 2001 is “way back,” sorry.

The latest update to kick off 2026 brings a whole host of upgrades to the text-to-speech and keymapper tools, and also integrates 12 new game engines, adding nearly 200 games to its roster.

It was originally intended to bring back support for SCUMM engine-powered games on modern machines. It does this by spinning up a virtual machine, which then lets you dig back into all thoseĀ LucasArts gamesĀ as close to the original experience as possible.

Now, alongside the dozens of games it already supports, classics of the genre can be easily replayed. Who doesn’t want to be made completely uncomfortable with Dark Seed?

A lot of this work has been going on for quite some time now. The Dark Seed engine’s merger with ScummVM began development in 2024.

ScummVM doesn’t supply a full list of games. As it explains in the full release notes, adding support for the WAGE-Engine, which runs classic Mac graphic text adventure games built in the World Builder toolset, adds more “than 160 titles so far.”

What games are now supported by ScummVM?

Here are the full release notes of the games added:

  • Dark Seed
  • God of Thunder
  • The Adventures of Willy Beamish
  • Heart of China
  • Nancy Drew: Secret of the Scarlet Hand
  • Nancy Drew: Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake
  • Ripley’s Believe It or Not!: The Riddle of Master Lu
  • Little Longnose
  • Pilot Brothers 3: Back Side of the Earth
  • Pilot Brothers 3D. The Case of Garden Pests
  • Pilot Brothers 3D-2. Kennel Club Secrets
  • Features of National Fishing
  • Mom Don’t Worry
  • Dog-n-cat: In the Footsteps of Unprecedented Beasts
  • Dog-n-cat: Island of Dr Ratiarty
  • Out of this World (Another World)
  • SLUDGE-based games, such as Out of Order, The Secret of Tremendous Corporation, Robin’s Rescue, and others, 12 titles so far
  • Adibou 2: Nature & Sciences
  • WAGE-based game. More than 160 titles so far
  • Penumbra: Overture
  • Tex Murphy: Martian Memorandum
  • Mort&Phil: A Movie Adventure (Special Edition)
  • Trick or Treat
  • Hodj ‘n’ Podj

Elsewhere, ScummVM has made some improvements to the text-to-speech functionality. Sixteen different engines got text-to-speech support, making it far easier for those hard of sight to jump into games. Keymapper support was also a major change this time around, with 21 different changes involving adding it to more parts of the engine than ever before.

Also on the list are different ports that got some changes. It’s so cool to see the DS and PS3 ports of the engine receiving updates. What’s even better is that the Atari ST port has also seen some love, too.
