While big budget MMOs are on the decline, the indie MMO market is trying to keep the genre alive. There’s quite a few floating around at the minute, though one of them stands out, with it being entirely free. The MMO in question is Dreadmyst, an upcoming indie 2.5D MMORPG developed by one person, and there’s no cost to giving it a go.
Dreadmyst is a passion project from a single developer, who is releasing the game onto Steam on January 9th at 3PM EST. At its core, it is an old-school MMORPG, with its graphics resembling those of an old Baldur’s Gate game. Albeit it plays like an ARPG with a core archetype in character creator, but then a deeper stat investment as you level up. The game has respec, but it’s costly. So, it’s one you want to think about.
The game also features solo dungeon grinding, if you’re more into the ARPG side of things. There’s also group dungeons for four players, requiring a tank, healer and DPS to complete. If you’re into PvP, there’s 1v1 and 2v2 arena battles too. It’s got the core of an old school MMORPG there.
If you’re interested in trying it out, the game is still in active testing till January 7th. Simply sign up and get the test client on the game’s website, which you can find at dreadmyst.com. If you miss out, don’t worry – the game launches completely free on January 9th too on Steam.
As it stands, the developer does not want any money from it. If the game completely takes off, then he may implement some monetization. But, according to the Discord, the servers are pretty well funded, with Steve saying: “Funding to host all the way up to 100k concurrently is paid out for 3 years. Its overkill but why not, I figured.”
So, there’s nothing to worry about. Simply log in and try one of those rare social MMO experiences that blow up. That’s what the genre is still about right? If you want something with a bit more visual flair, there’s also PastFate, which launches January 7th, which you can find on Steam.
