Obsidian has no plans to make The Outer Worlds 3, which sucks because the sequel was so much better than the first. So what went wrong?
According to a report by Bloomberg, Obsidian’s Fergus Urquhart confirmed that there are no plans to make The Outer Worlds 3. He noted that Obsidian has to “think a lot about how much we put into the games, how much we spend on them, and how long they take.”
It’s a bummer, since the game has a solid 8/10 almost everywhere, with a deep (sometimes too wordy) storyline, a satirical, dark look at the world, dynamic quests, deep NPCs, and super fun weapons to shoot.
I was definitely enjoying the game myself almost obsessively, until I accidentally sided with the capitalist faction while bumbling around on a side quest after skipping 3204982340 pages of dialogue. Woops.
Still, the game was great. Why did it fail?
The Outer Worlds 2 was overpriced, gamers feel
While The Outer Worlds 2 is a solid game, it failed to sell enough for Obsidian to consider it a success. As of January 2026, it was looking like it had sold fewer than 1 million copies. This means that most gamers didn’t even get to experience the gameplay.
Why did it sell so low? The game was priced at $69.99. As games continue to grow more expensive (and it may just be the beginning, unfortunately), players are pushing back. Many voiced that they don’t buy games at launch anymore and wait for Steam sales.
With inflation, an unstable job market, and the fear of AI slop, it was definitely a tough time to announce a $70 game. In fact, Obsidian initially claimed the game would be $80, which also left a bad taste in gamers’ mouths ahead of the launch. Despite releasing at a lower price point, the damage was done and the studio was marked greedy.
