Rust Naval Update release date reaffirmed for February with 2026 Roadmap teasers

Rust has not had a quiet year in 2025, with many new updates, play sessions, and cheater bans throughout the year, and of course, Rust Mobile was announced at The Game Awards. And, there’s no signs of that stopping either.

After delaying the Naval update from December, the developers have now revealed when the Naval update for Rust will be released, alongside a few new teases coming later in the year.

The main point of the Rust 2026 teaser is the Naval update release date. As mentioned, that was due to be released in December 2025; however, it needed more testing before going into the live build.

Now, the developers at Facepunch Studios have revealed it will launch on February 5th. The update will enable players to travel across open waters on player-made boats. Furthermore, the devs also mentioned that there will be islands to explore, alongside AI encounters to keep the sailing interesting.

The devs described it in the October blog post as adding floating cities, tropical islands, and large-scale naval combat into the game. The Floating Cities are basically huge landmarks, which you can loot, with pull-scale PvP enabled there too.

However, it was delayed due to it being a massive update, which interacted with numerous other game pillars, including crafting, base building, and other world effects. It was pushed back to make time for more testing.

If you want to test the Naval update out yourself, the staging branch is still live for testing. It should give you an idea of what is coming up and help the devs figure out what needs patching before they push it to live. Facepunch anticipates the Naval update to be huge, and so, they may even open up more servers on live launch to accommodate new and returning players.

2026 teasers for Rust

Alongside the longly awaited Naval update, players also got to see some teasers of upcoming content. The features range from character updates, map updates, and some other content updates. Such as:

  • New monuments on the map
  • New apartment complexes to loot and scavenge
  • New player models and animations to improve the player character experience
  • Experiments with new animals such as cows and sheep for farming and a proper breeding system to go with it. Those of you who wanted to ranch might get that cowboy experience
  • New weapons and gear, such as a Riot Shield for that tactical mobile cover
  • Hints of reworking older content systems that players are not too big on. The image teases putting Bradley on a train so maybe it helps get the Bradley into more players’ hands and actively integrates it with the other train events in game

There’s also some big tech-related changes upcoming. The devs are still actively working on performance, and provided insight into how that works. On many occasions, systems take weeks to patch, only to realize they did nothing in terms of real-time upgrades.

Some things are being targeted specifically in 2026, such as Navmesh and loading times. This is important, especially with the Naval update on its way, adding even more to the map and new items to load.

The devs are also aware of the need to optimize the game, especially with the tech space getting harder and harder to justify replacing PC components or upgrading PCs. Rest assured, tech optimization remains a needed upgrade.
