The Steam Machine has been delayed.
In a blog post from Valve, we learned that the Steam Machine has been delayed due to the continued rising cost of computer components.
“When we announced these products in November, we planned on being able to share specific pricing and launch dates by now,” Valve stated. “But the memory and storage shortages you’ve likely heard about across the industry have rapidly increased since then. The limited availability and growing prices of these critical components mean we must revisit our exact shipping schedule and pricing.”
Despite the setback, Valve stated that it still plans to launch the Steam Machine (and the Steam Frame VR headset and Steam Controller gamepad) in the first half of 2026.
How much will the Steam Machine cost?
While Valve reassured us that the Steam Machine will arrive in the next five months, the blog post didn’t mention a price point. So that’s still up in the air.
However, the rising costs of its required components don’t have us feeling warm and fuzzy inside. While more powerful than the current consoles, the Steam Machine doesn’t have the specs of a high-end gaming PC. But even the Xbox Series X|S is seeing constant price hikes, so it can’t be looking better for the Steam Machine and its better components.
In 2025, Valve claimed that the Steam Machine will be priced similarly to a PC with the “same level of performance.” On a podcast, Pierre-Loup Griffais said: “Ideally, we’d be pretty competitive with that and have a pretty good deal, but we’re working on refining that as we speak, and right now is just a hard time to have a really good idea of what the price is going to be because there’s a lot of different things that are fluctuating.”
Back then, that valuation would still be pretty pricey, maybe $600 or more. With the cost of computer parts continuing to increase and supply remaining scarce, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Steam Machine was priced even higher now.
