Where do I start with Apex Legends? As my personal favourite battle royale shooter, it demonstrates what happens when a game commits to skill-based combat. There’s little in the way of forgiveness or mercy, and it’s all the better for it.
Leveraging Hero shooter-like classes of unique Legends with their own personalities, the game is all about surviving the chaos while also playing your part in it – making it one of the best battle royale games on PC or console.
Movement is this game’s defining feature, and it remains completely unmatched in this area. Sliding, climbing, and rapid repositioning turn firefights into a constant motion and a search for momentum.
The learning curve is steep and unforgiving for new players, which may deter people from playing, which is why it was just beaten out for the number one spot among all battle royale games.

Fortnite stopped being just a battle royale game years ago. Its impressive list of modes and fan-made experiences are like nothing else in the genre, and it reinvents itself almost weekly with fresh skins, challenges, and much more.
It’s the best battle royale game because it balances being relatively easy to pick up and play, as well as offering a sky-high skill ceiling for competitive players.
It’s a great third-person shooter in its own right, one that runs well on every platform (including mobile), and while you can play with or without the building mechanic, those who spend the time learning it will be rewarded.
Fortnite map changes and mechanics come and go, and the massive live events blur the line between game and platform, but it remains the biggest game in the world for a reason.

Battle Royale games are typically multiplayer games featuring large numbers of players. Around 100 players arrive on a map, in either solos or teams, and must scavenge for gear and aim to be the last player standing.
Fortnite’s biggest competitor is arguably Apex Legends. While there are no battle royale games like Fortnite with its unique gameplay and building features, Apex Legends leans into fast movement and hero abilities, giving it its own distinct features. Call of Duty Warzone is also particularly popular.
