In Dispatch, Robert used to be a hero called Mecha Man. However, during a battle with his nemesis  in Episode 1, his suit is nearly destroyed. More importantly, its power source, the mysterious Astral Pulse, went missing in the encounter. Robert lacks the technical knowledge to make a new one, but he may not need to, as the Astral Pulse is found in Episode 6.

The Escapist recaps

  • Dispatch is an eight-episode video game about a superhero dispatch service, where the player manages a team of superheroes and sends them on various missions to help the city.
  • The player takes on the role of Robert Robertson, formerly Mecha Man, who had to retire when his suit was severely damaged in battle and its power source, the Astral Pulse, was lost.
  • Robert is offered a role as a dispatch agent for the SDN, guiding a superhero squad informally known as the Z-Team to different emergency locations.
  • In exchange for his help, the SDN is attempting to fix Robert’s suit, as well as replicate the Astral Pulse.
  • Unfortunately, during the first six episodes of Dispatch, Robert and the team have been unable to make a replacement for the Astral Pulse, with every attempt resulting in disaster.

What happens in Dispatch Episode 6?

In Dispatch Episode 6, after the Mecha Man suit blows up again, Invisgal realizes that she recognizes the explosion, as it matches the kind the Z-Team had seen on their missions. It turns out that the Astral Pulse wasn’t destroyed and has ended up in the hands of criminals, who are trying to unlock its power. Luckily, none of them have succeeded, so they keep selling it on.

The Z-Team has a party at Robert’s apartment, in an effort to combine the team’s knowledge and get a lead on the Astral Pulse’s location. Invisigal deduces it’s being held in a warehouse under heavy guard, so she suggests they raid it. Unfortunately, Chase is drunk, and he argues with Invisigal, saying horrible things about her villain background, leading to a smack.

Invisgal goes off on her own and tries to reclaim the Astral Pulse.

Robert can hack into the warehouse’s computers and aid her. However, Shroud, the supervillain who killed Robert’s father and who is after the After Pulse, is waiting. Invisigal’s asthma kicks in when Shroud uses a gas grenade on her, and he grabs the Astral Pulse.

Chase, feeling guilty about his previous actions, uses his superspeed power to save Invisigal, with Robert watching on surveillance cameras the entire time. The Dispatch Chapter 6 ending has Robert trying to get his keys so he can rush to Chase and Invisigal’s side.

So, was there a character death in Dispatch Chapter 6? It’s heavily implied that Chase dies saving Invisial in Dispatch. The reason for this is his superpower: Chase used to be a hero named Track Star. He used to work with Robert’s father, the previous Mecha Man, as they were both members of the Brave Brigade. Chase was even Robert’s babysitter when he was younger.

Chase’s power was super speed. However, it came with a cost, as using the power drastically accelerated Chase’s age. Despite being an old man, he’s actually 39. Chase implied that using his power again could kill him, considering his artificially enhanced age.

Chase dying at the end of Episode 6 would be fitting, as it gives him a chance at redemption for the horrible things he said about Invisigal’s past. Despite his words, she went to the warehouse on her own to try to reclaim the Astral Pulse, risking her life to keep the dangerous artifact out of the hands of the villains. Chase then gives his own life to save the next generation of heroes.

Can you save Chase in Dispatch Episode 6?

No, you cannot save Chase at the end of Dispatch Episode 6. While the player can make many choices throughout the story, none of them will affect the outcome. Regardless of who you side with at the party and what responses you give throughout the narrative, Invisigal will always run off, and Chase will always save her.

Chase saving Invisigal feels like a natural conclusion to his story. He gives up his life to save another hero, using his super speed one final time, and even says goodbye to Robert in the process. This is why the Dispatch Chapter 6 ending involves his sacrifice for the greater good.

Ask The Escapist

Why didn’t Chase try to take down Shroud when he went to save Invisigal?

Based on the camera footage, it appears that Shroud had already left with the suitcase containing the Astral Pulse. Considering his code name and the fact that he’s remained hidden for so long, it’s likely that Shroud is very good at hiding.

Why didn’t Shroud kill Invisigal when he had the chance?

Invisigal was choking due to a gas grenade, as she couldn’t access her inhaler due to Shroud kicking it out of her reach. Perhaps Shroud wanted to let her succumb to a painful death by leaving her to suffer? There’s also the possibility that she’s somehow in league with Shroud, and that he’s leaving her so she can return to spy on the heroes some more.

Dispatch is a superhero series, so surely that means Chase doesn’t have to stay dead?

In regular comics, the afterlife has a revolving door policy, with heroes and villains returning constantly. Dispatch is a little more grounded in reality, and while there are super-powered beings around, we haven’t seen any evidence of powers that can heal or bring back the dead, so it looks like Chase could be gone for good.
