Mortal Shell 2 is coming. Unveiled during Summer Game Fest 2025, Cold Symmetry’s grim, heavy-metal-infused soulslike action-RPG is back with new mechanics, brutal weapons, and grotesque new shells to possess. It’s still bleak, still unforgiving—but now, it’s faster, meaner, and more expansive. We’re going over what to expect from the Mortal Shell 2 release window.

We caught a glimpse of the Mortal Shell 2 gameplay in the reveal trailer: demonic crossbows, shotgun-style firearms, and hulking, nightmare-fueled enemies. The Soulslike combat returns, but with more flexibility and momentum. However, there are a few new interesting tweaks that could have this sequel stand above its predecessor.

The Escapist recaps

  • Mortal Shell 2 is coming in 2026.
  • Beta sign-ups live now, pre-launch open test incoming.
  • Day-one launch on PS5, Xbox, and PC (Steam).
  • Shell possession is back, along with range weaponry.
  • No stamina bar will be used this time around.

When could Mortal Shell 2 be released?

We know the Mortal Shell 2 release date is set for sometime in 2026, but the exact day is still under wraps. With that said, Cold Symmetry has confirmed a beta phase for early 2026, which gives us a pretty good sense of the timeline.

The first Mortal Shell game was developed on a tight budget and launched within a year of its first trailer, so a spring or summer 2026 launch seems likely. It’s also worth noting that the studio has grown since the first game’s release, with expanded publishing support and more visibility thanks to the success of Mortal Shell.

Expected Mortal Shell 2 price & pre-orders

So, what will the Mortal Shell 2 price be? The original launched at $29.99 as a budget title. However, now that it’s launching on PS5 and Xbox, and PC, we’re hoping Cold Symmetry keeps the price more budget-friendly. It likely won’t be $30, but there’s a world where we could see it released between $50-$60 instead of the now-standard $70.

Mortal Shell 2 pre-orders aren’t live yet, but they’ll likely roll out after the beta concludes.

Mortal Shell 2 platforms

Mortal Shell 2 is launching day one on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. This marks the series’ first simultaneous launch across all current-gen platforms.

If you’re still gaming on a PS4 or Xbox One, you’re out of luck, as they are not confirmed Mortal Shell 2 platforms; there’s just no last-gen version planned. Similarly, there is also no word on a Nintendo Switch 2 release, but this could change in the future.

Mortal Shell 2 trailer & gameplay analysis

The Mortal Shell 2 announcement trailer delivered everything fans of the previous Mortal Shell wanted and then some. Shell-swapping remains central: you still possess fallen warriors with unique combat stats and traits. If that body is “killed,” your original body is ripped out and left exposed.

This time around, your arsenal gets an upgrade. The Mortal Shell 2 trailer showed off a machine-gun crossbow, a high-caliber revolver, and a wicked-looking shotgun—all surprisingly well-integrated into the melee combat system. This isn’t just for show: ranged weapons are now a new way to break past enemy defenses or help create space for you to regroup.

The biggest mechanical shift for Mortal Shell 2 gameplay? No more stamina bar. The sequel removes this genre staple, encouraging more aggressive playstyles. Instead of backing off to regenerate, you’re constantly pressing forward, chaining dodges and attacks together.

Cold Symmetry has also promised better enemy variety, smarter AI, and over 60 explorable dungeons within its interconnected zones. Expect cryptic lore, haunting visuals, and plenty of punishment for the unprepared.

How does Mortal Shell compare to other Soulslikes?

Mortal Shell 2 stands apart from games like Dark Souls and Lies of P with more slower, deliberate gameplay style. Mortal Shell has always thrived on tension and pacing. The sequel dials that up—faster movement, more aggressive enemies, and now ranged chaos in the form of weapons that rip through decaying flesh and armor.

Mortal Shell 2 features a “compact open world” design: tightly woven zones filled with secrets, shortcuts, and punishing traps.

Mortal Shell 2 is a soulslike that doesn’t want to be just another Souls clone. It’s familiar, yes, but faster, bolder, and not afraid to tweak the rules. If Dark Souls is about discipline and waiting for your moment to strike, Mortal Shell 2 is about applying pressure and creating those moments yourself.

Ask The Escapist

Is Mortal Shell 2 a PS5 exclusive?

No. Mortal Shell 2 is not a PS5 exclusive. The game is launching simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC via Steam, so players across platforms can suffer equally.

Did Mortal Shell sell well?

Yes. For an indie game, Mortal Shell sold impressively well. By September 2023, it had sold over a million copies, thanks to strong reviews, word of mouth, and a passionate player base. That success paved the way for a much larger sequel.

Is Mortal Shell 2 a soulslike?

Mortal Shell 2 is a soulslike through and through, focused on tough melee combat, strategic dodging, and cryptic lore. The removal of the stamina bar and inclusion of ranged weapons is aiming for a more fluid and aggressive take on the formula.

With a confirmed Mortal Shell 2 release window in 2026, beta sign-ups underway, and gameplay that rewrites the rules without losing its soul, Cold Symmetry looks poised to impress. It’s aiming to no longer be the scrappy underdog but a full-on challenger in the soulslike arena.

If you thought the first game was punishing, Mortal Shell 2 is here to remind you how good it feels to die trying.
