Blue Dot Games announced during the Galaxies showcase the early access release date for ‘83. In addition, a representative for Blue Dot Games tells The Escapist that the release date patch addresses performance concerns. There should be substantial improvements following feedback from the game’s March 20th closed beta test.
Performance issues addressed after closed beta
The closed beta test in March highlighted major performance issues and bugs that concerned potential players. The development team has since focused on optimizing the experience, with the performance improvements being a direct response to community feedback from those sessions.
“We’ve made substantial progress on both graphical and network performance, with further noticeable improvements delivered since the Closed Beta,” the team stated. “Feedback from those recent playtests has been extremely valuable to the team and has directly informed work on the Early Access launch build.“
The game will now release into early access on April 23rd, a week since the game appeared on the Galaxies showcase, and month after the closed beta test.
83’s Early Access Release Date
As part of the Galaxies showcase, the show featured the game revealing some core features of the game, alongside an early access release date. You can find the video mirror via X if you’re curious below.
For those unaware, ’83 is set in a 40 v 40 server environment based on the Cold War going hot. Players will fight on opposing NATO vs Warsaw Pact nations and battle it out across several maps and modes.
’83 is developed to be like a Rising Storm Vietnam successor, with many of the dev team working on the game before founding Blue Dot Games. We spoke with lead developer Sturt Jeffrey back in March, getting his thoughts on the recently announced commander mode and the general idea of how they want their different commanders, infantry, and vehicle squads balancing together for early access.
In the press release, CEO Tony Gillham explained the studio’s design philosophy.
“Our motto for ’83 was ‘accessible realism’, where everything – from the uniforms to the specific sounds and animations of firing each gun – is thoroughly researched to create a historically accurate shooter, yet we still want the game to be fun to play, with merciful respawn times,” said Gillham. “Don’t let the accessibility fool you; while anyone can pick up ’83 and have a good time, teams will still need to communicate and perform their role well to seize a victory. ’83 carves out specific Commander and Squad Leader roles for veterans to guide their squad, while rookies can learn the ropes from the front lines until they know the game well enough.“
With the performance improvements now implemented based on closed beta feedback, the team appears confident the early access build will address the main concerns raised by playtesters. The game launches April 23rd. There’s currently no price, but the FAQ on the site says, “We will be announcing pricing of ‘83 nearer to Early Access launch.“ Expect a price announcement sometime next week.
