When I first watched the trailer for Halo: Campaign Evolved, the let down Halo community commented: “Well, at least it looks pretty.” But even that may become a contention point with gamers now that it’s possible AI was involved.
The creative team behind Halo: Campaign Evolved has declined to reply to recent questions about the use of generative AI. This has led to a lot of suspicion from the gaming community.
Halo remake could have been made with generative AI
The long-awaited (and delayed) reveal of Halo Studios’ next project was a bit of a letdown for Halo fans, who were underwhelmed with getting a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved — and only the campaign portion at that.
Still, it created a lot of media attention. This included Rolling Stone interviewing the devs — which didn’t go as intended.

A prominent Halo leaker took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a screenshot of the Rolling Stone interview, which had the reporter asking Game Director Greg Hermann and Executive Producer Damon Conn about the use of generative AI.
Conn’s response?
“I want to be very clear… People are creative. People make games. AI can improve workflows. It can do things for the game.
But I want to be very specific and clear that the people are the ones who are creating the game.”
Wait, so AI is involved?
“It’s a tool in a toolbox,” continued Hermann. “I may go a little off message here, but some of that gets very challenging when we look at how integrated AI is becoming within our tooling.”
He then went on to pretend that using Photoshop is the same thing as using AI, so…
Interestingly, neither Halo boss was willing to say “yes” or “no.”
The way I’d interpret these responses? Developers are claiming that AI isn’t generating any in-game assets but may be using AI to improve workflow. It’s not clear what this exactly entails. Is AI being used to automate development tasks like coding and bug fixing? Is it being used to generate environmental assets and improve NPC behavior? Is it being used to create dialogue and voice lines? Is it being prompted to improve visuals?
We can’t know because the devs have not really disclosed anything specific. As the leaker pointed out on his post, if AI was not being used, wouldn’t devs just say no?
The real question in 2025 is: Which games have not used AI?
