Everyone’s favourite adventurer – sorry, Indy! – is back in a brand new game, titled Tomb Raider: Catalyst. Revealed at The Game Awards 2025, this Crystal Dynamics creation will be the latest chapter in the renowned heroine’s extensive career. After a seven-year absence (not including the OG Tomb Raider remasters), fans are delighted to see Lara’s return.

Details regarding the new Tomb Raider: Catalyst are somewhat elusive, however, as this is the second of two new Lara Croft titles from the developers. Consequently, Crystal Dynamics is only teasing us at this time. Still, we’ve seen enough to know that Lara is back. Without further ado, let’s dive into the depths of what The Escapist knows so far.

The Escapist Recaps

  • Tomb Raider: Catalyst was announced at The Game Awards 2025 and will mark a new era in Lara Croft’s history.
  • The Tomb Raider: Catalyst game is the second of two new Lara Croft adventures from Crystal Dynamics, with the first being a remake rather than a totally new experience.
  • Tomb Raider: Catalyst’s release date is 2027, though when specifically, The Escapist cannot say at this time.
  • Although we don’t know many details about its narrative yet, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is set after the Legend Trilogy

When could Tomb Raider: Catalyst be released?

Tomb Raider: Catalyst’s release date is 2027; however, what day or month within that timeframe hasn’t been disclosed. Arguably, this is due to Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis being released first in 2026.

In focusing on the remake first, Crystal Dynamics has set Lara’s new adventure up nicely so that newcomers can experience an updated version of a classic right before they embark on a new journey with her.

Beyond those extremely limited details, the launch date for Tomb Raider: Catalyst remains enigmatic, much like Lara’s new adventure altogether.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst’s price hasn’t been set yet, though gamers should prepare for a hefty price tag. After all, this is a big franchise returning to our screens after a long absence.

Bearing that in mind, a basic cost of $69.99 is a reasonable estimation. Still, with video game costs always increasing, Lara may bring a new price threshold along with her new adventure.

The Tomb Raider: Catalyst announcement gave no clues as to when pre-orders will open, nor what bonuses fans can expect to see, though this is hardly surprising given we’re a ways from its launch.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst platforms

Tomb Raider: Catalyst will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. You’ll note that there’s no mention of Nintendo Switch 2 here, which some fans may find disheartening.

Although Switch 2 isn’t a supported platform for Tomb Raider: Catalyst just yet, that doesn’t mean the game won’t eventually launch on the platform; with more faith in its software than ever before, we should expect to see bigger titles being added in due time.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst trailer & gameplay analysis

When all is said and done, the Tomb Raider: Catalyst trailer is just a teaser, designed to give us nothing more than a sample of what’s to come. As such, it gives nothing away about its deeper narrative.

What’s clear from the trailer is that Lara is now an established adventurer, having built a name for herself in her previous adventures. In the Survivor Trilogy, we saw how the legend was born; in Tomb Raider: Catalyst, we’re seeing how our heroine has forged a unique and dangerous path for herself. The whole world now knows her name, which makes things a little tricky.

Set in North India, Lara is attempting to uncover the truth long buried in the wake of a mythical cataclysm. On a quest to find answers, she’s going to find hordes of greedy treasure hunters looking for a way to cash in a quick buck, one of whom we see attacking Lara in the Tomb Raider: Catalyst trailer.

A brief glimpse of Lara jumping, wall running, shooting, and generally getting herself into all kinds of trouble can be spied in the trailer; however, this is of a cinematic quality to set the scene rather than in-game footage. Nonetheless, the scale of Tomb Raider: Catalyst is grand, showcasing breathtaking vistas and ancient lost tombs.

As Lara so aptly says in the trailer, she’s only just getting started.

Ask The Escapist

Who is developing Tomb Raider: Catalyst?

Long-time fans will be relieved to learn that Crystal Dynamics is at the helm of the title’s development. Although not the original developers of the franchise – that was Core Design – Crystal Dynamics has been in control of the series since the early 00s.

When does Tomb Raider: Catalyst release?

As previously mentioned, beyond a release window of 2027, we don’t know a specific date for its launch. But we won’t have to wait too long to see Lara in action, thanks to Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.

Is Tomb Raider: Catalyst a remake or a new game?

Tomb Raider: Catalyst is the start of a new chapter for Lara Croft, featuring a totally new and original story. She’s now an established adventurer and intends to prove it.

What is Tomb Raider: Catalyst about?

Crystal Dynamics is keeping the finer plotpoints of the title close to the chest right now. From what we’ve gleaned from the Tomb Raider: Catalyst trailer and the details offered by the devs, Lara’s new adventure takes her to North India. There, she’ll collide with an ancient world to uncover the truth and attempt to avoid a catastrophe.
