Sad that Dispatch’s over? Play these 5 Telltale adventure games next

As quickly as it became a hit with fans, Dispatch has come to an end. After eight episodes of decision-making and high stakes, to suddenly have no other episodic adventures to play can leave fans feeling down in the dumps. Even though a sequel may get greenlit, it’s unlikely we’ll hear about it any time soon.

If you’re looking for games like Dispatch, Telltale Games has quite the selection of episodic adventures for you to play. Several members of the old Telltale team worked on Dispatch, so if you enjoyed its storytelling, you should add these five classic Telltale adventures to your to-play list.

The Escapist recaps

  • Dispatch has come to an end, with all eight episodes now available.
  • Even though the first game is over, there are still plenty of other episodic games like Dispatch to play.
  • The old Telltale Games archives are the best place to explore, seeing as how several members from the original studio worked on Dispatch
  • The Escapist has compiled a list of five Telltale adventures you should play next, which includes The Walking Dead Season 1, Tales from the Borderlands, The Wolf Among Us, Batman: The Telltale Series, and Tales of Monkey Island.

Batman: The Telltale Series

Not only does Batman: The Telltale Series have superb storytelling, but it also follows one of the most renowned superheroes in popular culture. Don’t be fooled into thinking Batman’s story has already been told; despite being such a popular character, Telltale did an exceptional job of delivering a new angle for the Caped Crusader and his enemies.

Batman: The Telltale Series is the first season, with Batman: The Enemy Within being the second and final season. While many fans praise the sequel in particular, the first season is where it all begins, and thus is the best place to start your adventure.

Gotham’s stability, which has always been shaky at best, is further challenged, as is Bruce’s. His choices will shape the city, as if the pressure wasn’t already mounting. In Telltale’s Batman, the hero’s fate is far from cut and dry.

The Walking Dead Season 1

Regardless of whether you’re a horror fan or not, The Walking Dead Season 1 is another brilliant Telltale adventure that should be at the top of your to-play list. Dispatch has breathed new life into narrative adventures, and this title is a prime example of the genre at its peak.

There are four main seasons of Telltale’s The Walking Dead, all of which are worth playing. That being said, the first season is one of the best, if not the best, of the bunch. You don’t need to have watched or read anything related to the franchise to play, although certain characters will be familiar to those who enjoyed the graphic novels.

Just like with Dispatch, the choices you make have lasting consequences, some of which are more damning than others. Unlike Dispatch’s ending, however, The Walking Dead has a much bleaker tale to tell.

Tales from the Borderlands

Next on our games like Dispatch rundown is Tales from the Borderlands. Set between the events of the second and third Borderlands titles, it helps to know the IP for a more detailed experience. Nonetheless, going in without any prior knowledge won’t prevent you from enjoying this five-part adventure.

You follow the story of Rhys and Fiona, a duo who are looking to shake up life on Pandora. Both have their own unique set of skills, and both will determine which way the story goes; whether you succeed is completely down to you and your choices. Described as a “crucial chapter” of Borderlands’ canon lore, these five episodes aren’t to be missed. Expect laughter, tears, and drama before you’re journey is through.

The Wolf Among Us

This list wouldn’t be worth its salt without mentioning The Wolf Among Us. When gamers think of episodic adventures, they often think of this title first.

Based on the Fables series, this is a thriller with fairytale twists, though don’t go expecting anything light and fluffy here – this is a hard-hitting tale that’s as brutal as it is bloody. If you want your choices to really mean something, this is the high-stakes game for you.

Although you play as the sheriff of the town, Bigby Wolf, there’s danger around every corner. Praised by fans on Steam for being “Telltale at its finest”, even after all these years, fans still hold out hope that a sequel will be made.

Tales of Monkey Island

Dispatch, while having its more serious moments, is filled with humour. Suppose you want to delve deep into the waters of a Telltale Games adventure that delivers a similar experience, albeit in a very different setting. In that case, Tales of Monkey Island is a wise choice.

Even though the decisions made don’t have as far-reaching consequences as those from other Telltale titles, you’re still in the driving seat of how Guybrush Threepwood interacts with the world around him. And while nobody is going to die because of a decision you make, they’ll likely give you a smart-mouthed quip or uniquely help you solve a puzzle.

Even if this doesn’t prove to be one of your favourite Telltale Games adventures, it’s a short but sweet game that has all the hallmarks of the mechanics that made the old Telltale Games such a beloved studio.

Ask The Escapist

What happened to Telltale Games?

Telltale Games closed back in 2018, with the main issues cited as mismanagement and financial problems. Telltale expanded very quickly but then overextended itself, with some of its newer titles proving less successful than previous ones. Consequently, layoffs and its eventual closure ensued.

Why are Telltale Games’ titles considered adventure masterpieces?

Telltale Games’ writing is arguably what made the studio a formidable presence in the narrative adventure genre. Partnered with the weight of the decisions players could make, Telltale Games created experiences where it really felt like you changed the outcome of a story.

Do you need to play these Telltale titles in chronological order?

Unless you intend to play through an entire series, like with The Walking Dead, the chronological order of the games listed isn’t important.

Will Dispatch Season 2 happen?

AdHoc Studio has yet to confirm a sequel; however, here’s everything we know about Dispatch Season 2 so far.
