The 1990s were a great time to be alive, video games were really truly coming into their own. Those around to play them were in for a treat, these games were new and fresh. So check out these games and maybe get a few to play and relive the wonderful decade of the 90s.
1991’s ActRaiser put you in the shoes of god-like creature named “The Master”. You are pitted against Tanzra, a creature very similar to Satan. Tanzra takes control of the world, and turns the world evil. This is very much like a precursor to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, as you’re fighting against Tanzra’s lieutenants working your way up to the evil one himself.
Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty was released for MS-DOS in 1992. The plot of this game is basically a game of Civ, you control whichever house you prefer while you farm spice for Emperor Frederick. If you deliver the most spice to the Emperor you will get sole governorship of Arrakis, you could control the flow of the spice if you win.
1993 saw the release of Cybernator. This shooter takes you to the future when the world’s fossil fuels are coming to an end. You play as a lowly marine that controls a Federation Assault Suit, the task you must complete will have you facing off against a powerful mech from the opposing side. So suit up and prepare to have a serious battle for the future of the world.
Knuckles’ Chaotix came out in 1995 for the Sega 32X. This game was very similar to the previous Sonic titles, except for the fact that this time around you are playing as Knuckles. The game consists of five worlds, each with five side scrolling levels. You’re still going after Dr. Robotnik’s thugs along the way, even up til the end when you once again face off against the main baddie, Dr. Robotnik.
1995’s Terranigma is an action RPG that has you battling enemies from a top-down perspective. As you go along you collect gems you can then use to buy weapons, armor, and healing items. The premise is that the Earth is a hollow sphere, with the external side being the good side, and the inner area being the dark side.
1995 also saw the release of Vectorman. This game put you in the shoes of Vectorman, a robot whose sole purpose was to dispose of toxic waste by sending it into the sun. While you’re away getting rid of the waste the Earth is taken over by an evil force named Warhead. Upon your return you do whatever you can to return Earth to its previous glory.
1998’s survival horror RPG Parasite Eve took you to an alternate world, where in 1997 people start to spontaneously combust. You’re a rookie cop in New York City, and you must fight Eve. What plays out is five days of pure terror, as you’re the only person that can attack Eve, because everyone else would spontaneously combust if they got close to her.
Syphon Filter was released in 1999 and spawned a series of games that were produced up through 2007. This franchise started out as a game about terrorists using biological weapons. Syphon Filter is the name of the deadly weapon, you’re tasked with hunting down the dirty bomb. You’ll travel the globe looking for the people behind the Syphon Filter, hopefully you’ll find them in time to save the world.
