The Rise of Skywalker Is Disney’s 7th Movie from 2019 to Cross $1 Billion

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is Disney’s latest film to breach the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Variety reports that, as of Jan. 14, the Skywalker Saga finale is the seventh Disney film from 2019 to cross the mark, having earned $481 million domestically and $519 internationally. The Rise of Skywalker released Dec. 20, meaning it took 28 days before the $1 billion milestone was reached.

For comparison, the two previous films in the saga, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, took 12 and 19 days to cross the mark respectively. In each film’s first weekend in theaters, The Force Awakens garnered $494 million worldwide, The Last Jedi brought in $437.5 million, and The Rise of Skywalker came in a bit lower with $373 million. Though the movie is lagging behind its predecessors in terms of box office revenue, The Rise of Skywalker is still the 46th film ever to make it past $1 billion total.

This achievement should come as no surprise, especially considering the massive numbers the film managed to pull in on Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, a version of Episode IX’s script supposedly written by Colin Trevorrow, who was originally set to write and direct the film before being removed, made its way over to YouTube and Reddit in an apparent leak recently. Since then, Star Wars fans have been mulling over what The Rise of Skywalker could have been in an alternate universe.
