Black Adam Starring Dwayne Johnson Announces 2022 Release Date

Just days after we learned for sure that Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam isn’t going to be the big bad in the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods, we’re getting a release date for his movie. Black Adam has received a release date of July 29, 2022. Dwayne Johnson also shared some new animations when teasing the announcement of the release date that shows off some history of Black Adam. The press announcement additionally came with the intriguing tagline of, “The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change.”

The movie is set to start filming in the next few weeks and has fleshed out its cast, including casting Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate, another DC hero who is closely connected with the mystical side of DC that Black Adam and Shazam are involved in. The cast is currently rounded out by Noah Centineo playing Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Clearly the film will be introducing a lot of deep hero cuts as DC expands its universe through Shazam, an outcome no one could have predicted a few years ago. We don’t know much about Black Adam‘s storyline at the moment.

The film was supposed to land this December but with shooting delayed multiple times and DC shuffling its release schedule round, it’s been bumped plenty. This puts the movie in pretty close competition with Black Panther 2 and the next Fantastic Beasts film, which both land in July as well at the moment. It is also now opening the same weekend that Indiana Jones 5 is slated for, though that isn’t a firm date and could easily shift so as to not compete with Black Adam.
